Yoga Sūtra: Chanting and Philosophy

The Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali is perhaps the seminal work on the meaning and purpose of Yoga. The study of this text is not simply an academic curiosity, but a vital means of deepening our self-understanding and transforming our consciousness. In this seminar, we will explore essential teaching from all four chapters through not only lecture and discussion, but also through integrated practices such as chanting and meditation.

The first chapter provides a foundation for our yoga practice, giving a fundamental understanding of why we practice. The second chapter provides guidance for how we should practice, both on and off the mat. The third chapter explores the powerful concentration that can be cultivated through practice and the various mystical capabilities it can produce as well as the dangers of being seduced by them. And finally, the fourth chapter focuses on the ultimate realization of our true nature. This course will provide insight into how the sūtras can help us to cultivate clarity, compassion, strength and joy in our practice and in our lives. All levels are welcome!
